World Intellectual Property Organization Awards Fernando Fischmann Gold Medal for Inventorship

Chilean scientist Fernando Fischmann has been recognized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for the impact his innovations have had in the fields of water technologies, medicine, food and logistics.

The biologist and real-estate developer, who founded Crystal Lagoons, a company that builds large artificial clear water lagoons in urban environments and holiday resorts, has more than 2,630 patented inventions to his name in 190 countries.

His inventions, associated with large crystalline lagoons and which have in recent years diversified into new high impact areas such as desalination, food, medicine, e-commerce and logistics are exemplary of Fischmann’s experience and correct use of the patenting system worldwide. 

It is this record of inventions that led the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) –the UN agency that works to protect scientific, literary, artistic and industrial work- to award the “Gold Medal for Inventors” to Fischmann, through the nomination made by Chile’s Intellectual Protection Agency (Inapi).

The award aims to promote inventiveness and protect intellectual property around the world. In Fischmann’s case, it highlights his capacity to research and develop technology as well as protect its intellectual property.

Fischmann’s main inventions are designed to improve people’s quality of life. The patents are for construction and water treatment using minimal energy and chemicals. These creations have become embodied in the more than 1,000 large crystalline lagoons in projects at different stages of development around the world. These technologies draw on technologies from the industrial world that are used for sustainable cooling system and water desalination without using energy.

Crystal Lagoons is entering in a new area of intellectual property, where there an intense focus on logistics systems to revolutionize global e-commerce.
