Crystal Lagoons fills a record number of lagoons in 2022

08/22/2022

The disruptive technology developed and patented by Crystal Lagoons is now present practically all over the world, with more than 1,000 projects across five continents in different stages. Some 800 of these are Public Access Lagoons™ projects.

These innovative lagoons add value to real estate developments, including urban, master-planned, multi-family, mixed-use, and hospitality projects. In 2022, we broke the record of lagoons filled in a single year, with new lagoons coming into operation on all the continents,” said Alejandro González, Global Director of Engineering at Crystal Lagoons.

How do you explain this success?

This year has been amazing, and we have almost doubled our 2021 operations. We have seen an upward trend driven by the pandemic. The need for safe relaxation and recreation places, coupled with recent heat waves, has piqued people’s interest in large swimmable bodies of water.

Which regions have the most lagoons in the process of filling?

Between 75% and 80% of all new projects are in the Northern hemisphere. In Europe, the largest crystalline lagoon in the continent is being filled in Santa Rosalia, Spain. Although the United States is our primary market worldwide, Latin America is also experiencing a record uptake, and we continue to see consolidation in the Middle East, with Egypt leading the way, a true phenomenon.

Which countries have the most lagoons in the process of filling?

Egypt is experiencing an upturn in the second home market both on the North Coast (Mediterranean) and on the East Coast (Red Sea) and has many lagoons in the process of filling. There are more than 40 projects at different stages, including the largest crystalline lagoon in the world (12.5 hectares) in the Citystars Sharm El Sheikh complex, in the middle of the desert.

The Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina stand out in Latin America with projects such as The Beach, Nya, Baia Kristal, AquaTerra, Costa del Lago, Acquavista, and Remeros Beach, all of which are about to open.
